Meet the Farmer

Hi there! I’m Christy Heckathorn — founder, farmer, florist, and the heart behind Fleurish Flower Farm.

Fleurish began in 2020 after more than twenty years as a wedding florist. When the wedding industry suddenly slowed during COVID, I found myself looking for a new creative outlet. My husband Chad already had the land through our family farming operation near Elk Point, South Dakota, so I took a flower farming class, planted my first seeds, and never looked back.

Growing things has always been part of my story. I grew up in southwest Minnesota where my dad was known for raising unusual things — mushrooms, asparagus, and my four brothers (ha!). He was an entrepreneur with big ideas, and my parents created spaces that welcomed people in. Looking back, Fleurish feels like a natural extension of that upbringing: part creativity, part hospitality, part getting your hands dirty.

As our children got older, flower farming became a way for me to grow something of my own while still creating spaces for people to gather. I love every part of the process, from starting tiny seeds in the spring to arranging armfuls of blooms in the middle of summer. More than anything, I love seeing people slow down here. A warm evening, flowers in bloom, live music drifting through the field, friends gathered around picnic tables — those are the kinds of moments that inspired Fleurish from the beginning.

At its core, Fleurish is about beauty, community, and creating a place where people feel welcome.

About the Farm

Discover one of the loveliest spots in Union County, S.D.

Nestled beside Brule Creek just north of Elk Point, South Dakota, Fleurish Flower Farm is a seasonal flower farm surrounded by working farms. The property is home to rows of specialty flowers, white picket fences, and the historic summer kitchen featured in our logo.

From mid-July through October, the farm opens for You-Pick evenings, photo nights, and seasonal events featuring local musicians, food vendors, and small businesses from around the area. Guests wander through the flower fields with cups in hand, gathering their favorite blooms while enjoying slow summer evenings outdoors.

We grow more than 75 varieties of specialty flowers, many of which cannot be found in grocery stores. As summer fades into fall, the flower fields give way to heirloom pumpkins in unusual colors, textures, and shapes.

One unexpected feature of the farm is the grass runway tucked behind the property. Pilots are welcome to fly in for events and visits throughout the season.

Whether you visit for flowers, live music, pumpkins, photos, or an evening outside, we hope Fleurish feels like a place to slow down and enjoy the season.
